How is NDITE different from Anki?

Three differences. First, NDITE has a write-mode review where you produce the answer with a stylus or finger before you grade yourself, instead of flipping straight to the answer. Second, NDITE is built on a modern stack with a clean UI rather than Anki's fifteen-year-old hybrid Python and Qt interface. Third, NDITE imports your existing Anki decks so switching costs nothing. NDITE uses the same FSRS v6 scheduling algorithm as modern Anki, so the underlying scheduling efficiency is comparable.

Why not just say the answer out loud, then flip the card?

Because speaking and writing leave different traces in the brain. A 2021 transcranial magnetic stimulation study (Mathias et al., Journal of Neuroscience) showed the primary motor cortex causally stores foreign vocabulary learned through writing and gesture — disabling it slowed recall specifically for those words. A 256-channel EEG study at NTNU found handwriting produces theta and alpha coherence across memory-formation regions that speaking does not. Saying it aloud is better than silent self-grading, but it activates a shallower trace than forming every character by hand.

Will I be able to import my Anki decks?

Yes. NDITE has a first-class .apkg importer that preserves your decks, notes, cards, media, and scheduling state, converting Anki's SM-2 state into FSRS state. We treat Anki migration as a hard adoption requirement, not an afterthought. AnKing decks are specifically tested for compatibility, and suspended cards stay suspended on import so your review queue doesn't explode on day one.

Do I need a stylus to use NDITE?

No. NDITE supports finger input on any touch device and mouse or trackpad on desktop. A stylus on a tablet is the best experience, but it is not required.

Which languages does NDITE support at launch?

All Latin-script languages at launch: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and so on. Japanese, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Korean, Arabic, and Cyrillic scripts ship in a later version, with stroke-order grading for kanji and hanzi on that roadmap.

The FSRS scheduling implementation work will be contributed back to the open-source FSRS project. The NDITE application itself is closed source — this funds development and a sustainable free tier. We are committed to data portability: your decks export cleanly anytime.

What's the privacy story?

Your decks and review history are yours. We don't sell data and we don't run advertising. We use first-party analytics. In the MVP, your handwriting never leaves your device — write-mode is self-checked, so there is no recognition server processing your ink.
